The Matawan Fire Department, in Matawan New Jersey, was established in 1869 by Washington Engine Company, and has a long history of serving and protecting the local community. The Hook & Ladder Company was formed in 1877, followed by the formation of the Midway Hose Company and M.E. Haley Hose Company in 1903. The Hook and Ladder Company later merged with the Midway Hose Company forming Broad Street Station. The Freneau Volunteer Fire Co was formed in 1921 as an independent fire company before joining into the borough of Matawan. Over the years, the department has adapted to changing needs and advancements in firefighting technology. Its members have worked tirelessly to ensure the safety of Matawan's residents. The department's history is marked by the bravery and commitment of its members and serves as a testament to the importance of fire safety and public service.
On January 1, 2019 longtime volunteer firefighter Freddy Benjamin was sworn in as deputy chief, becoming the first African-American to hold the position in the department's 150+ year history. “We don’t only fight fires, It’s about giving back to the community, helping out as much as I can.” - Freddy Benjamin
